Would you like to know more about Mannam?

Would you like to know more about Mannam?

Interviewed by the Chairwoman of Mannam, Ms. Nam Hee Kim
Mannam Chairwoman - Nam Hee Kim

Q. What do you think about volunteerism mean as the Chairwoman of Mannam?

-> I think that every basic foundation of ideology is filial piety, and it is not limited to only Korea. When one is dutiful to one's parent, it is filial piety; when the same devotion is shown to a country, it becomes loyalty; and in religion, it becomes faith. And they are based on sacrifice, thinking of other before oneself, which is the spirit of volunteer service. Mannam's service is voluntary and dedicating oneself as if he or she is doing work at one's home, even when picking up garbage on the street. This is the spirit of Mannam.

Q. What's the plans for the future of the organization?

-> A. Our vision is to work as pure volunteers who give back to the community.

Q. Mannam's slogan is "When Light meets Light, there is Victory!".
What does it mean by then?

-> A. Each person is light, also should become a person like light. As these people who are like light meet, we can defeat the darkness from the world.

Mannam's logo

Q. What is Cultural-art volunteer meant to Mannam?

I heard Mannam is alike true volunteerism and a great planning. Supporting the poor is not only Mannam's volunteer work but also letting a delivery of the message of hope through the Cultural- art performance and a receiver who experience the love to be met and become one is our Cultural-art volunteerism.

Q. Why does Mannam do country-related events?

->A. It is very natural to dedicate time and efforts to those we love. As Mannam loves its country and sincerely appreciates those who sacrificed their lives for the country, it is logical to give our time and effort. We do not see this as sacrifice. The question of "Why do you do country-related events? is equivalent to the question of "Why do you love another?"

-> These are the Korean version of Mannam's Q&A.

Hope everyone enjoys to reading. Thank you.

Mannam judo is good at Ground Sparring

It seems like being a while and posting loads of ground sparring.

But, today will be very refreshing one because we are going to focus on different types of sparring though.

Generally, there are different names and forms of sparring in terms of sports.
Not only judo has sparring techniques but also many different martial arts have sparring.

In Muay Thai and boxing, sparring is normally called sparring

But, Chinese martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and Japanese martial arts are used in their own jargon like San shou(Pushing hands), rolling and randori

This video clip shows how the two different level of judoka plays.

It must be a big match! :)

Jacob's Mannam Judo Story

Jacob, I often mentioned his name on our blog.
He is one of our favorite members from Mannam judo club as he never lose his smile and also funny, positive, active and talkative (in good way^^). These days he is keen on doing judo as he found it attractive more than yoga. (I think so ) so let's discover more about him.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

-> My favorite colour is blue, I love to eat kimchi-tisgae(kimchi stew) sushi, and salad.
I have many heroes. Among athletes I love the soccer players Luis Suarez, Gareth Bale, and Christiano Ronaldo, and the MMA fighter Georges St. Pierre from my home town Montreal.
I love jazz, classical and K-pop.
I love weight lifting, tennis, squash, scuba diving, running and martial arts. My favourite marial art is judo.

2. When did you start joining Mannam judo and how did you meet with us?

->  I can not remember when I started. I guess it was last summer, maybe June.
First, I joined another Mannam group which did volunteer events on the weekend, next I joined the Mannam soccer team, I then heard about the Mannam judo club from the web site.

3. What is your favourite thing about being in Mannam judo club?

-> My favourite thing about the judo club is learning judo.
I love judo, because it is fun to throw people (lol) and exercise.
I also like that the people in the judo class are very friendly.
I think the judo club is a very relaxing and friendly place.
I like joking around with the club members.

4. When was the most happiest moment in Korea?

My happiest moment living in Korea was probably skiing or going to the world Expo in Yosu.
I love travelling around Korea and seeing traditional Korean things.
Actually city life can be boring and stressful, although going to night clubs is also fun.
I also enjoyed the judo tip to Jeonju, where we got to eat really good noodles and walk around a more traditional town.

5. Any difficulties learning judo?

Judo has two confusing aspects.
First, your most effective move is to turn your back on your opponent and throw them over, and this is not a natural feeling, since in most fighting you want to face your opponent.
Second, in wrestling and other fighting arts you want to tense your muscles, but in judo like boxing you want to be loose and suddenly use all your force.
I am still trying to smoothly do the various techniques.
Once I have to actually spar I seem to forget some of the techniques, so application of the skills is also a challenge.

6. What is the one thing that you cherish the most?

I cherish personal relationships and friendship.
I like to have a healthy relationship with friends so that I can enjoy the good things in life.

7. Any word you want to say to Mannam judo team?

I think Mannam judo members should also try their best in everything they do, especially try to keep up your fitness level by running, swimming and doing other cardio activities. A healthy mind needs a healthy body.

Mini Soccer for warming up

Warming-up is so important before any kind of sports.

The place where Mannam Judo is held seems like a soccer play ground so at the starting of the lesson, we decided to just do it before the judo time.

Mini soccer game is actually so much fun.
Playing soccer really helps for warming body up and is a good sport for developing our fellowship. : )

Nice Team

So, guess who will be the winner at last?  ^^

Awesome Team

It's also warming up for mini soccer.

Although the game period is approximately 20 minutes, we never be exhausted it even gives us dynamic and fun training judo time.

When you are in happy mood, your judo ability is actually improving a lot.

Therefore, mini soccer game is our favourite in Mannam Judo club.

Does not just stay in a typical judo lesson, try something unique to get refreshed in Mannam judo.

(Blue) Level test in Mannam Judo

Today (2nd of Feb) had a level test at Hanyang University Class.
We waited for six months before we tested for blue. Usually people get as its easy.

(At the same time we had different thoughts...)

A Blue Belt level test requirements

- Ability to demonstrate all break-fall(forward rolling and backward) from right and left side

- Instructor let you upside down stroke and check how you do break-fall by falling.

- No contest wins required.

->> The grading test in Mannam Judo is such a great tool to help give each member a sense of progression and achievement. Let's keep our enthusiastic about Judo.

Practice only makes for improvement!
