Why are you barefoot when practising Judo?

Today, Hanyang University where Mannam Judo class run every Thursday were absolutly frozen and he mats were like icy due to no heating oil. We had to put on our shocks even thought its not proper way but, we could not play without them.

Suddenly this question banged to my head.

"Why are we barefoot when we do Judo?"

Maybe the answer is just simple as a matter of safety and cleanliness.

But, in order to be a real pro of Judo, I need to discover the fact in terms of history and lead you to think this because its fun! :D

So now I am asking again...  about why wearing socks are not allowed during the Judo time.

Reason1. Most martial arts play in their barefoot.

Reason2. In the earliest years, most people did not have shoes. Especially ancient Japanese were  removed the shoes at the door when entering home.
Therefore, Judo is practised without shoes, since its indoor sports.

Judo time
Reason3. Judo should be practised on mats in a controlled environment.

Dangerous moment!

With wearing shoes or socks you could accidentally end up causing injuries to the opponent from the hard abrasive rubbing.

NO Socks!

YES Barefoot!
( I know its not good smell~lol but be love one and other ;) )

Reason4. The advantage of barefoot is helpful for strengthens the muscles on your foot and grappling. Like Judo the feet should be used like a second set of hands as players have a crude ability to grasp.

Therefore, barefoot are more pleasure for opponent in Judo.

Mannam Judo daily class - Nice shot & best quotation

DAILY CLASS photo with best 'Judo' quotations
* Place: Hanyang University

Before and after starting judo or engaging in a match, opponents bow to each other.
In Asian culture, especially Korean or Japanese, bowing is an expression of gratitude and respect. In practice, you are thanking your opponent for letting you the opportunity to improve your technique.

Consider fully, act decisively. by Jigoro Kano

"To me, Judo is like a ballet, except there's no music, no choreography, and the dancers knock each other down." by Jack Handey

 Judo is simply an individual matter, because it is played between only two people.
Real Judo means magnification of rationality and not mere feat of physical strength.

 SABU says: after realizing a principle, unless you learn it with your body you cannot expect to get true meaning.

Ruslan's Mannam Judo story

1. What is your name?

-> Ruslan Sartbaev

2. How long have you been in Korea?

-> About three years

3. When did you start learning Judo?

-> Since I joint the Mannam Judo Club I began to learn Judo.
Before I used to play Sambo, which is a Russian martial art, when I was in my hometown, Kyrgyzstan.  So getting involved in the Japanese martial art was not so hardwork to me as other beginners did. (pointing out ) haha. (I am not boasting at all. )

5. What do you like about Mannam Judo?

->  AH! People I have met from Judo were a very pleasure to have in this country where I could be lonely or unhappy for staying. But, I think Mannam Judo team let me have lots of opportunities to face world-wide people. Therefore, I like everything from here, especially Mannam people who always teach me how to love. That's why I am always full of love when I am in Mannam Judo team. :)

6. The most impressive moments about Mannam Judo.

-> The most impressive? umm,, let me think about..
In the summer of 2012, I got a golden medal from the Judo individual tournament in Jeon ju.
Although I was in the biggest pain by getting injured my right shoulder, I just could not give up
and walk away behind other members. But, I did not expect to achieve the first place I finally did!! it was a miracle. I especially thank to Sabu who gives me the wonderful introduction of Judo that's the reason why my Judo has been improved so well, and also to my parents who always support me.

7. Last words you want to say to us.

-> Today is passing to the end but, it is precious since it never comes back.
So I would like to keep in touch with all you guys even 5 or 10 years later. Let's go for a picnic in my country or any other country. ^^
